Solution
1. Preparation
  • Tools Required: Tread depth gauge or a quarter.
  • Ensure the vehicle is parked on a flat, level surface.
  • Engage the parking brake for safety.
2. Measuring Tread Depth
  • Step 1: Insert the tread depth gauge into the tire tread at multiple points (at least three locations across the width of the tire).
  • Step 2: Press down on the gauge until the base is flush with the tire tread.
  • Step 3: Read the measurement from the gauge, noting the depth in 32nds of an inch.
  • Step 4: If using a coin, insert the coin into the tread grooves. If the top of Washington's head is visible, the tread is worn down to 2/32 inch or less.
  • Step 5: Repeat the measurement process for each tire.
3. Assessing Results
  • Step 1: Compare the measurements to determine if any tires are below the safe threshold (2/32 inch).
  • Step 2: Note any tires that show uneven wear which may indicate alignment issues or other mechanical problems.
