Solution
1. Preparation
  • Gather necessary tools and parts.
  • Disconnect the battery before working on the electrical systems to prevent shorts.
  • Raise the vehicle using jack stands for access to the exhaust system.
2. Remove the Faulty Oxygen Sensor
  • Tools Required: Oxygen sensor socket, ratchet, torque wrench.
  • Locate the Bank 1, Sensor 2 oxygen sensor in the exhaust system.
  • Disconnect the electrical connector from the oxygen sensor.
  • Use the oxygen sensor socket to unscrew the old sensor from its mount. Note the orientation for installation of the new sensor.
3. Install New Oxygen Sensor
  • Parts Required: New Bank 1, Sensor 2 oxygen sensor (ensure it matches OEM specifications).
  • Apply anti-seize compound to the threads of the new sensor (if not pre-applied).
  • Screw in the new oxygen sensor by hand to avoid cross-threading, then use the torque wrench to tighten it to the manufacturer's specification (typically around 30-35 ft-lbs).
  • Reconnect the electrical connector firmly ensuring a good connection.
4. Clear Codes and Test
  • Reconnect the battery.
  • Use the OBD-II scanner to clear the P0138 code and any other stored codes.
  • Start the engine and allow it to reach operating temperature; monitor the scanner for any reoccurrence of the P0138 code.
