Solution
1. Preparation
  • Tools Required: Socket set, torque wrench, spark plug gap tool, ratchet extension, compressed air (optional), anti-seize compound.
  • Ensure the engine is cool before starting.
  • Disconnect the negative battery terminal to prevent electrical shorts.
2. Access the Spark Plugs
  • Remove Engine Cover: If equipped, use a socket wrench to remove any bolts securing the engine cover and remove the cover.
  • Remove Ignition Coils: Disconnect the electrical connectors from each ignition coil. Unbolt each coil using the appropriate socket and carefully pull the coils out.
3. Remove Old Spark Plugs
  • Clean Spark Plug Wells: Use compressed air to blow out any debris around the spark plug wells to prevent contamination.
  • Unscrew Spark Plugs: Use a spark plug socket with a ratchet to carefully unscrew each spark plug. Turn counterclockwise and remove them from the cylinder head.
4. Install New Spark Plugs
  • Check Gap on New Plugs: Before installation, measure the gap on each new spark plug using a feeler gauge and adjust as necessary according to the specifications (usually around 0.043 inches for the Camry).
  • Apply Anti-Seize Compound: Lightly apply anti-seize compound to the threads of each new spark plug to prevent galling during future removal.
  • Install New Spark Plugs: Carefully screw in each spark plug by hand first to avoid cross-threading, then tighten using a torque wrench to the manufacturer-recommended torque (typically around 13 lb-ft).
5. Reassemble Components
  • Reinstall Ignition Coils: Place each ignition coil back into position and secure using the bolts. Reconnect the electrical connectors.
  • Replace Engine Cover: If removed, reinstall the engine cover and secure it with the necessary bolts.
  • Reconnect Battery: Reconnect the negative battery terminal.
