Solution
1. Preparation
  • Tools Required: Socket set, torque wrench, spark plug socket, extension bar, ratchet, dielectric grease.
  • Safety Warnings: Disconnect the battery before starting work to prevent electrical shock.
2. Remove Engine Cover (if applicable)
  • Remove any screws or clips securing the engine cover.
  • Lift the cover off gently and set it aside, taking care not to damage any wiring.
3. Access Spark Plugs
  • Locate the spark plug wires or ignition coils on top of the engine.
  • If equipped with ignition coils, disconnect the electrical connectors by pressing the tab and pulling them out.
  • Remove the bolts securing the ignition coils using a socket or ratchet.
4. Remove and Replace Spark Plugs
  • Use a spark plug socket and extension to carefully unscrew each spark plug from the cylinder head.
  • Inspect the old spark plugs for wear and deposits; this helps identify engine issues.
  • Check the gap of the new spark plugs using a gap tool and adjust if necessary (typically 0.043 inches for Toyota).
  • Apply a small amount of dielectric grease to the threads of the new spark plugs to prevent seizing.
  • Install the new spark plugs by hand to avoid cross-threading, then tighten them to the manufacturer's recommended torque (13 lb-ft for Toyota).
5. Reinstall Ignition Coils and Engine Cover
  • Reinstall the ignition coils and secure them with their bolts.
  • Reconnect the electrical connectors to the ignition coils.
  • Replace the engine cover and secure it with the screws or clips removed earlier.
6. Reconnect the Battery
  • Reconnect the negative battery terminal and ensure it is tight.
