Solution
1. Preparation
  • Tools Required: Socket set, wrench set, power steering fluid, rags, leak detection dye (optional).
  • Safety Warnings: Disconnect the battery before starting work. Allow the engine to cool before inspecting the power steering system.
2. Check and Refill Power Steering Fluid
  • Locate the power steering fluid reservoir.
  • Remove the cap and check the fluid level. If low, add the appropriate type of power steering fluid as specified in the owner’s manual.
  • Inspect the fluid for contamination; if dirty, proceed to fluid replacement.
3. Inspect and Replace Power Steering Fluid
  • Place a drain pan under the power steering fluid reservoir.
  • Disconnect the return hose from the power steering pump.
  • Allow old fluid to drain into the pan.
  • Reconnect the hose and fill the reservoir with new power steering fluid.
  • Start the engine and turn the steering wheel from lock to lock to purge air from the system.
4. Inspect Power Steering Pump
  • Locate the power steering pump and inspect for any visible leaks.
  • Check the belt connected to the pump for wear or looseness. Replace if necessary.
  • If the pump is noisy or damaged, remove the pump by:
    • Disconnecting the hoses and electrical connectors.
    • Unbolting the pump from its mounting.
    • Installing the new pump in reverse order.
5. Inspect Steering Rack
  • Check the steering rack for any signs of fluid leaks.
  • If a leak is found, replace the steering rack assembly by:
    • Removing the steering column connection.
    • Disconnecting the tie rods.
    • Unbolting and removing the rack.
    • Installing the new rack and reassembling all components.
