Solution
1. Preparation
  • Tools Required: Socket set, screwdrivers, power steering fluid, fluid siphon, torque wrench.
  • Ensure the vehicle is parked on a level surface and the engine is turned off.
  • Disconnect the negative battery terminal to prevent electrical issues.
2. Inspect and Replace Power Steering Fluid
  • Locate the power steering fluid reservoir.
  • Use the fluid siphon to remove any old fluid from the reservoir.
  • Inspect the fluid condition; if it’s dark or contaminated, proceed to replace it.
  • Refill the reservoir with the manufacturer-recommended power steering fluid until it reaches the appropriate level.
3. Check and Replace Power Steering Pump
  • Locate the power steering pump; ensure it’s securely mounted.
  • Remove the belt from the power steering pump using a socket set.
  • Disconnect the power steering lines from the pump using appropriate tools; be prepared for fluid spillage.
  • Unbolt the pump from its mounting and replace with a new unit, ensuring proper torque specifications are followed.
  • Reconnect the power steering lines and install the belt back onto the pump.
4. Inspect and Repair Steering Rack
  • Lift the vehicle securely and remove the front wheels.
  • Inspect the steering rack for any signs of wear or damage.
  • If replacement is necessary, disconnect the steering linkage from the rack.
  • Unbolt the steering rack from its mounts and remove it from the vehicle.
  • Install the new steering rack, ensuring all mounting bolts are torqued to specifications.
  • Reconnect the steering linkage.
5. Final Assembly
  • Reinstall the front wheels and lower the vehicle to the ground.
  • Reconnect the negative battery terminal.
  • Start the vehicle and turn the steering wheel from lock to lock to bleed any air from the system.
