Solution
1. Preparation
  • Tools Required:
    • Jack and jack stands
    • Lug wrench
    • Socket set (including a 14mm socket)
    • C-clamp or brake caliper tool
    • Torque wrench
    • Brake cleaner
    • Brake grease
  • Safety Warnings:
    • Ensure the vehicle is on a flat surface and the parking brake is engaged.
    • Wear gloves and safety goggles to protect against debris and chemicals.
2. Raise the Vehicle
  1. Use the lug wrench to slightly loosen the wheel lug nuts (do not fully remove).
  2. Lift the vehicle using a jack at the designated lifting points.
  3. Secure the vehicle on jack stands for safety.
  4. Remove the loosened lug nuts and then the wheel.
3. Remove the Brake Caliper
  1. Locate the caliper mounting bolts (typically two bolts).
  2. Use the socket set to remove these bolts.
  3. Carefully slide the caliper off the brake rotor without stretching the brake line.
  4. Support the caliper using a bungee cord or similar method to avoid stress on the brake line.
4. Remove Old Brake Pads
  1. Slide the old brake pads out of the caliper bracket.
  2. Inspect the caliper bracket for debris or corrosion and clean if necessary.
5. Compress the Caliper Piston
  1. Use a C-clamp or brake caliper tool to gently push the caliper piston back into its housing.
  2. Ensure the piston is fully retracted to accommodate the new brake pads.
6. Install New Brake Pads
  1. Apply a light coat of brake grease to the back of the new brake pads.
  2. Slide the new brake pads into the caliper bracket, ensuring they are seated properly.
7. Reinstall the Brake Caliper
  1. Position the caliper over the new brake pads and align it with the caliper bracket.
  2. Reinstall and tighten the caliper mounting bolts to the manufacturer’s specified torque (typically 80-100 ft-lbs).
8. Reinstall the Wheel
  1. Place the wheel back onto the hub.
  2. Hand-tighten the lug nuts before lowering the vehicle.
  3. Lower the vehicle off the jack stands using the jack.
  4. Fully tighten the lug nuts in a star pattern to the manufacturer’s specified torque (typically 75 ft-lbs).
