Solution
1. Preparation
  • Gather all necessary tools and parts.
  • Ensure the vehicle is parked on a level surface and that the engine is turned off.
  • Wear safety gloves and goggles for protection.
2. Inspect and Top Off Brake Fluid
  • Tools Required: Brake fluid
  • Check the brake fluid level in the master cylinder reservoir.
  • If low, top it off with the appropriate brake fluid (DOT 3 or DOT 4 as specified by the manufacturer).
3. Brake Booster Inspection
  • Tools Required: None
  • With the engine off, pump the brake pedal several times to deplete vacuum in the booster.
  • Start the engine while holding the brake pedal down. The pedal should drop slightly; if it doesn’t, the brake booster may be faulty.
4. Vacuum Level Testing
  • Tools Required: Vacuum gauge
  • Disconnect the vacuum hose from the brake booster.
  • Connect the vacuum gauge to the hose and start the engine. It should read at least 18-20 inHg. If the reading is low, check for leaks in the vacuum line or the intake manifold.
5. Replace Brake Booster (if necessary)
  • Tools Required: Socket set, wrenches
  • Disconnect the negative battery terminal.
  • Remove the brake master cylinder from the brake booster.
  • Unbolt and remove the brake booster from its mounting.
  • Install the new brake booster and reverse the steps to reassemble.
