Solution
1. Preparation
  • Gather necessary tools and parts.
  • Ensure the vehicle is parked on a level surface and the engine is off.
  • Wear safety goggles and gloves.
2. Lift the Vehicle
  • Use a jack to lift the front or rear of the Highlander, depending on the noisy brakes.
  • Secure the vehicle with jack stands for safety.
3. Remove Wheels
  • Use a socket set to remove the lug nuts and take off the wheel where the noise is originating.
4. Inspect and Replace Brake Pads
  • Inspect Pads:
    • Check the brake pads for wear. If the friction material is less than 3 mm, replace them.
  • Remove Old Pads:
    • Unbolt the caliper using the appropriate socket.
    • Slide the caliper off the rotor and support it with a bungee cord (do not let it hang by the brake line).
  • Install New Pads:
    • Apply brake grease to the back of the new pads to reduce squeal.
    • Insert new pads into the caliper bracket.
5. Inspect and Resurface/Replace Rotors
  • Inspect Rotors:
    • Check for grooves or warping. If the rotor thickness is below specifications, replace it.
  • Resurfacing:
    • If acceptable, use a brake lathe to resurface rotors or replace them with new ones if damaged.
6. Reassemble Braking Components
  • Reattach the caliper over the new pads and torque the bolts to the manufacturer’s specifications (usually around 25-35 ft-lbs).
  • Reinstall the wheel and torque the lug nuts to the manufacturer's specifications (typically 76-85 ft-lbs).
7. Lower the Vehicle
  • Carefully lower the vehicle back to the ground using the jack.
