Solution
1. Preparation
  • Tools Required: Jack and jack stands, socket set, wrench set, tie rod end puller, and torque wrench.
  • Safety Warnings: Ensure the vehicle is securely supported on jack stands before working underneath it. Disconnect the battery if working with electronic steering systems.
2. Raise the Vehicle
  • Use the jack to lift the front of the Highlander.
  • Securely place jack stands under the vehicle for safety.
3. Remove the Wheel
  • Loosen the lug nuts on the front wheel using a socket wrench.
  • Remove the lug nuts and take off the wheel to access the tie rod end.
4. Disconnect the Tie Rod End
  • Use a tie rod end puller to separate the tie rod end from the steering knuckle.
  • Remove the cotter pin if present and use a wrench to loosen the nut on the tie rod end.
5. Install New Tie Rod End
  • Compare the old tie rod end with the new one to ensure correct sizing and threading.
  • Thread the new tie rod end into the steering rack, ensuring that it is adjusted to a similar length as the old one.
  • Tighten the nut securely and insert a new cotter pin if applicable.
6. Reassemble and Lower the Vehicle
  • Reinstall the wheel and tighten the lug nuts to manufacturer specifications.
  • Lower the vehicle back to the ground.
7. Alignment Check
  • It is recommended to have a professional wheel alignment performed after replacing the tie rod end to ensure correct steering geometry.
