Solution
1. Preparation
  • Gather tools: OBD-II scanner, multimeter, socket set, jumper cables, hammer.
  • Ensure the vehicle is in park (automatic) or neutral (manual) and the parking brake is engaged.
2. Battery Inspection
  1. Check Battery Connections:

    • Disconnect the negative (-) terminal first, followed by the positive (+) terminal.
    • Inspect for corrosion; clean terminals with a wire brush if necessary.
    • Reconnect the positive (+) terminal first and then the negative (-).
  2. Test Battery Voltage:

    • Use a multimeter to measure the voltage; replace the battery if it reads below 12.4 volts.
3. Jump-Start the Vehicle
  1. Set Up Jumper Cables:

    • Connect the red (positive) cable to the dead battery's positive terminal.
    • Attach the other end of the red cable to the positive terminal of the working battery.
    • Connect the black (negative) cable to the working battery's negative terminal.
    • Attach the other end of the black cable to an unpainted metal surface on the dead vehicle.
  2. Start the Working Vehicle:

    • Allow it to run for a few minutes before attempting to start the Highlander.
4. Inspect and Replace Starter Motor (if necessary)
  1. Locate the Starter:

    • Remove any components obstructing access to the starter motor.
  2. Remove the Starter:

    • Disconnect the electrical connections (note their positions).
    • Remove the mounting bolts using a socket set.
    • Carefully pull the starter out of the engine bay.
  3. Install New Starter:

    • Position the new starter in place and secure it with the mounting bolts (tighten to manufacturer specifications).
    • Reconnect the electrical connections to the starter.
5. Final Checks
  • Reconnect battery terminals if they were disconnected.
  • Ensure all tools and loose parts are removed from the engine bay.
