Solution
1. Preparation
  • Tools Required: Steering wheel puller, socket set, torque wrench, flathead screwdriver, Phillips screwdriver, OBD-II scanner.
  • Ensure the vehicle is parked on a flat surface and engine is off.
  • Disconnect the negative battery terminal to prevent airbag deployment during repairs.
2. Remove the Steering Wheel
  1. Remove Airbag Module:

    • Locate the airbag retention screws on the back of the steering wheel.
    • Use a Phillips screwdriver to remove the screws and carefully detach the airbag module.
    • Disconnect the airbag connector and set the module aside safely.
  2. Remove Steering Wheel Nut:

    • Use a socket to remove the center nut securing the steering wheel.
    • Mark the position of the steering wheel relative to the steering column for reinstallation alignment.
  3. Pull Off the Steering Wheel:

    • Use a steering wheel puller to gently extract the steering wheel from the column.
    • Be cautious not to damage the ignition switch or other components.
3. Replace the Clock Spring
  1. Remove the Old Clock Spring:

    • Disconnect the wiring harness connected to the clock spring.
    • Remove any screws or fasteners securing the clock spring to the steering column.
    • Carefully lift the old clock spring out.
  2. Install the New Clock Spring:

    • Align the new clock spring according to the marked center position and place it on the steering column.
    • Secure it with screws or fasteners as per vehicle specifications.
  3. Reconnect Wiring Harness:

    • Plug in the clock spring wiring harness and ensure it is securely connected.
4. Reinstall the Steering Wheel and Airbag
  1. Reattach the Steering Wheel:

    • Position the steering wheel back onto the column, aligning it with your previous mark.
    • Secure the center nut with the torque wrench to the manufacturer's specifications (typically around 40-50 ft-lbs).
  2. Reconnect the Airbag Module:

    • Reconnect the airbag connector and carefully fit the airbag module back into place.
    • Secure it with the previously removed screws.
  3. Reconnect Battery and Final Checks:

    • Reconnect the negative battery terminal.
    • Clear any error codes using the OBD-II scanner and check the functionality of the airbag, horn, and steering wheel controls.
