Solution
1. Preparation
  • Tools Required: Jack stands, wheel chocks, OBD-II scanner, socket set, differential fluid pump, and a drain pan.
  • Ensure the vehicle is on a level surface and safely elevated with jack stands.
2. Fluid Replacement
  • Drain Old Fluid:
    1. Place a drain pan under the differential.
    2. Remove the drain plug and allow the old fluid to completely drain.
  • Inspect Fluid Condition: Look for metal shavings or discoloration in the drained fluid.
3. Replace Differential Fluid
  • Add New Fluid:
    1. Use a differential fluid pump to fill the differential with the appropriate type of fluid as specified in the vehicle manual.
    2. Fill until fluid begins to seep out of the fill hole.
    3. Replace and tighten the fill plug to the manufacturer's torque specifications.
4. Bearing and Gear Inspection
  • Remove Differential Cover (if necessary):
    1. Drain the fluid again if the cover is removed.
    2. Remove the bolts from the differential cover and gently pry it off.
  • Inspect Gears and Bearings:
    1. Check the gears for wear or damage.
    2. Inspect bearings for pitting or roughness. Replace if necessary.
5. Reassemble and Test
  • Reinstall Components:
    1. Clean the mating surfaces of the differential cover.
    2. Use a new gasket or sealant as required, and reinstall the cover.
    3. Tighten cover bolts to the manufacturer's specifications.
  • Lower the Vehicle: Remove jack stands and lower the vehicle from the lift.
