my Toyota RAV4 won't start but lights come on what could be wrong

1. Preparation

• Gather tools and parts as needed.
• Disconnect the negative battery terminal to ensure safety while working on the vehicle.

2. Inspect and Clean Battery Terminals

• Remove the positive and negative battery cables.
• Clean the terminals with a wire brush to remove corrosion.
• Reconnect the battery cables securely.

3. Test and Replace Battery (if necessary)

• If the battery voltage is below 12.6 volts, charge or replace the battery.
• To replace, remove the battery hold-down bracket, lift out the old battery, and install the new battery, ensuring the correct terminal connections (positive first, then negative).
• Torque the battery terminals to 10-15 ft-lbs.

4. Check and Replace Ignition Switch (if necessary)

• Remove the steering column cover using a socket set.
• Disconnect the wiring harness from the ignition switch.
• Test the ignition switch for continuity; if faulty, replace it with a new unit.
• Reassemble the steering column cover.
