Solution
1. Preparation
  • Gather necessary tools and materials.
  • Ensure the vehicle is parked on level ground and the parking brake is engaged.
  • Safety warning: Always wear safety glasses and gloves while working.
2. Lift the Vehicle
  • Use a hydraulic jack to lift the rear of the vehicle.
  • Secure it on jack stands to ensure stability.
3. Inspect the Differential Fluid
  • Tools Required: Socket set, drain pan.
  • Remove the differential fill plug using the appropriate socket.
  • Check fluid level; it should be up to the fill hole.
  • If the fluid is dark or has metal shavings, it needs to be replaced.
4. Replace Differential Fluid (if necessary)
  • Tools Required: Socket set, fluid pump, new differential fluid (as specified in the owner's manual).
  • Drain the old fluid into a drain pan by removing the drain plug.
  • Replace the drain plug after fluid is fully drained, then refill with new differential fluid using the pump until fluid starts to seep out of the fill hole.
  • Replace the fill plug and torque it to the manufacturer’s specifications (usually around 30 ft-lbs).
5. Check for Differential Noise
  • With the vehicle still on jack stands, rotate the rear wheels by hand.
  • Listen closely for any grinding or abnormal sounds coming from the differential.
