Solution
1. Preparation
  • Gather Tools and Materials:
    • Spark plug socket (usually 5/8” or 16mm)
    • Ratchet and extension
    • Torque wrench
    • Gap gauge
    • Dielectric grease
    • Shop towels
  • Safety Warning: Disconnect the negative battery terminal to prevent electrical shorts.
2. Remove Engine Cover
  • Sub-steps:
    1. If equipped, remove any plastic engine cover by unscrewing the bolts or clips holding it in place.
    2. Lift off the cover and set it aside carefully.
3. Access Spark Plugs
  • Sub-steps:
    1. Locate the ignition coils on top of each spark plug.
    2. Disconnect the electrical connectors from each ignition coil by pressing the tab and pulling them off.
    3. Remove the bolts securing the ignition coils and carefully pull the coils straight out to avoid damaging them.
4. Remove Old Spark Plugs
  • Sub-steps:
    1. Use the spark plug socket and ratchet to carefully unscrew each spark plug from the cylinder head.
    2. Gently pull the spark plug out, taking care not to drop debris into the cylinder.
5. Install New Spark Plugs
  • Sub-steps:
    1. Check and adjust the gap on the new spark plugs using a gap gauge to the manufacturer specifications (usually around 0.043 inches or 1.1 mm).
    2. Apply a small amount of dielectric grease to the threads of the new spark plugs to aid installation and prevent seizing.
    3. Hand-thread the new spark plugs into the cylinder head to avoid cross-threading, then tighten them to the specified torque (typically around 13 lb-ft or 18 Nm).
6. Reinstall Ignition Coils and Covers
  • Sub-steps:
    1. Reinstall the ignition coils, securing them with their bolts.
    2. Reconnect the electrical connectors to each ignition coil.
    3. Replace the engine cover by aligning it properly and securing it with the bolts or clips.
7. Reconnect Battery and Test
  • Sub-steps:
    1. Reconnect the negative battery terminal securely.
    2. Start the engine to ensure smooth operation and check for any misfires or abnormal sounds.
