Solution
1. Preparation
  • Tools Required: Socket set, torque wrench, transmission jack, OBD-II scanner, fluid catch pan, safety glasses, gloves
  • Disconnect the negative battery terminal to prevent electrical shock.
  • Raise the vehicle and secure it on jack stands.
2. Remove Transmission
  1. Drain Transmission Fluid:
    • Place a fluid catch pan under the transmission pan.
    • Remove the transmission pan bolts and allow fluid to drain completely.
  2. Disconnect Components:
    • Remove the driveshaft (if applicable, depending on whether it’s AWD or FWD).
    • Disconnect the shift linkage, electrical connectors, and any associated sensors.
  3. Remove Transmission Bolts:
    • Unbolt the transmission from the engine using the socket set, ensuring to keep track of all bolts.
  4. Lower Transmission:
    • Use a transmission jack to safely lower the transmission from the vehicle.
3. Remove Old Torque Converter
  1. Access Torque Converter:
    • Rotate the flywheel to access the torque converter bolts.
    • Remove the bolts securing the torque converter to the flexplate.
  2. Remove Torque Converter:
    • Carefully slide the torque converter off the input shaft of the transmission.
4. Install New Torque Converter
  1. Prepare New Torque Converter:
    • Apply a thin layer of transmission fluid to the seal of the new torque converter.
  2. Install Torque Converter:
    • Slide the new torque converter onto the transmission input shaft until it engages securely.
  3. Reattach Torque Converter:
    • Secure the torque converter to the flexplate using the previously removed bolts. Torque to manufacturer specifications (typically around 43 ft-lbs).
5. Reinstall Transmission
  1. Raise Transmission:
    • Use the transmission jack to lift the transmission back into place.
  2. Secure Transmission:
    • Bolt the transmission back to the engine, ensuring all bolts are tightened to specifications.
  3. Reconnect Components:
    • Reattach the driveshaft, shift linkage, electrical connectors, and any sensors that were removed.
6. Fill Transmission Fluid
  • Refill the transmission with the correct type of fluid (typically Toyota ATF WS) through the dipstick tube.
7. Final Checks
  • Reconnect the negative battery terminal.
  • Start the engine and check for leaks or unusual noises.
