Solution
1. Preparation
  • Gather tools and parts needed for the repair.
  • Disconnect the negative battery terminal to ensure safety during the repair process.
2. Inspect and Clean Throttle Body
  • Tools Required: Throttle body cleaner, soft cloth, socket set.
  • Remove the air intake duct connected to the throttle body using a socket wrench.
  • Spray throttle body cleaner onto a soft cloth and wipe the interior surfaces of the throttle body.
  • Ensure that the throttle plate moves freely; if it's sticking, apply cleaner and gently move the plate until it operates smoothly.
  • Reattach the air intake duct and tighten the clamps securely.
3. Spark Plug Replacement
  • Tools Required: Spark plug socket, torque wrench, dielectric grease.
  • Remove the ignition coils by unscrewing the bolts and disconnecting the electrical connectors.
  • Use a spark plug socket to remove the old spark plugs.
  • Check the gap of the new spark plugs and adjust as necessary to the manufacturer's specification (typically around 0.044 inches for RAV4).
  • Apply a small amount of dielectric grease to the threads of the new plugs before installation.
  • Install the new spark plugs and torque them to the manufacturer’s specification (usually around 13 lb-ft).
  • Reinstall the ignition coils and reconnect electrical connectors.
4. Fuel System Check
  • Tools Required: Fuel pressure gauge.
  • Locate the fuel pressure test port on the fuel rail.
  • Connect the fuel pressure gauge and turn the ignition on (do not start the engine).
  • Observe the pressure reading; it should be within the manufacturer's specified range.
  • If the pressure is low, inspect the fuel pump, fuel filter, and fuel lines for blockages or failures.
5. Idle Air Control (IAC) Valve Inspection
  • Tools Required: Torx screwdriver.
  • Locate the IAC valve on the throttle body.
  • Remove any screws holding the IAC valve in place and disconnect the electrical connector.
  • Inspect the valve for carbon buildup; clean if necessary with throttle body cleaner.
  • Reinstall the valve ensuring it is securely fastened.
