Solution
1. Preparation
  • Gather tools: socket set, multimeter, jumper cables, and a hammer.
  • Ensure the vehicle is in park (automatic) or neutral (manual) and the parking brake is engaged.
  • Disconnect the battery negative terminal to prevent any electrical shorts.
2. Battery Inspection
  • Reconnect the battery and check the voltage using a multimeter.
    • If voltage is below 12.4 volts, charge the battery using a battery charger.
  • Clean the battery terminals with a wire brush to remove any corrosion.
  • Reconnect the battery terminals securely.
3. Jump-Start the Vehicle
  • Connect the jumper cables to the dead battery and a functioning battery in the following order:
    1. Connect red cable to the positive terminal of the dead battery.
    2. Connect the other end of the red cable to the positive terminal of the good battery.
    3. Connect the black cable to the negative terminal of the good battery.
    4. Connect the other end of the black cable to a grounded metal surface on the dead vehicle.
  • Start the functioning vehicle and let it run for a few minutes before attempting to start your Golf.
4. Starter Motor Inspection
  • If the vehicle still does not start, gently tap the starter motor with a hammer while a helper turns the ignition key to start.
  • If the engine starts, the starter motor may need to be replaced.
5. Replace Starter (if necessary)
  • If tapping the starter does not work, remove it for inspection.
    1. Disconnect the battery negative terminal again.
    2. Remove any covers or components obstructing the starter.
    3. Disconnect the electrical connectors from the starter.
    4. Unbolt the starter from its mounting.
    5. Install the new starter in reverse order, ensuring all connections are tight and secure.
