Solution
1. Preparation
  • Gather necessary tools and parts.
  • Park the vehicle on a level surface and engage the parking brake.
  • Place wheel chocks behind the rear wheels for safety.
2. Check Fluid Level
  • Remove the power steering fluid reservoir cap.
  • Inspect the fluid level; if low, top off with the manufacturer-recommended fluid.
  • Check the fluid condition; if dark or contaminated, consider a fluid change.
3. Inspect for Leaks
  • Visually inspect the power steering pump, hoses, and connections for any signs of fluid leakage.
  • Clean any residue before checking for new leaks after operation.
4. Inspect Drive Belt
  • Examine the power steering pump drive belt for fraying, cracks, or looseness.
  • If damaged, loosen the tensioner and replace the belt with a new one, tightening it to the manufacturer’s specifications.
5. Bleed the Power Steering System
  • Raise the front of the vehicle using jack stands.
  • Turn the steering wheel from lock to lock several times with the engine running to expel air from the system.
  • Check fluid level again and top off as necessary.
6. Replace Power Steering Pump (if necessary)
  • If noise persists after the above steps, remove the power steering pump:
    • Disconnect the battery.
    • Drain the power steering fluid.
    • Remove the drive belt and disconnect hoses from the pump.
    • Unbolt and remove the pump from its bracket.
  • Install the new pump:
    • Position the new pump in place and secure with bolts to the manufacturer’s torque specifications.
    • Reattach hoses and drive belt.
  • Refill the power steering fluid and bleed the system again.
