Solution
1. Preparation
  • Gather necessary tools and parts.
  • Disconnect the battery to prevent electrical shorts.
  • Ensure the vehicle is parked on a level surface and the engine is cool.
2. Inspect and Replace Oxygen Sensors
  • Tools Required: O2 sensor socket, torque wrench, penetrating oil
  • Remove the upstream (pre-catalytic converter) oxygen sensor:
    • Apply penetrating oil to the sensor threads if it's difficult to remove.
    • Use the O2 sensor socket to unscrew the sensor.
  • Install the new upstream oxygen sensor:
    • Torque it to manufacturer specifications (typically around 30 lb-ft).
  • Repeat the process for the downstream (post-catalytic converter) oxygen sensor if necessary.
3. Inspect and Repair Exhaust Leaks
  • Tools Required: Exhaust pipe cutter, welding kit or exhaust clamps
  • Visually inspect all joints and seams in the exhaust system.
  • Tighten any loose connections or replace gaskets as needed.
  • For larger leaks, cut out the damaged section and weld in a new piece or use exhaust clamps to secure a replacement section.
4. Replace the Catalytic Converter (if necessary)
  • Tools Required: Socket set, jack and jack stands, exhaust hanger removal tool
  • Lift the vehicle and secure it on jack stands.
  • Remove the exhaust hangers holding the catalytic converter in place.
  • Unbolt the catalytic converter from the exhaust pipes.
  • Install the new catalytic converter:
    • Ensure the inlet and outlet flanges are clean and free from debris.
    • Bolt the new catalytic converter in place and torque to specifications.
  • Reinstall exhaust hangers and lower the vehicle.
