why does my Volkswagen Tiguan First Generation (2007-2018) have low oil pressure warning light

Solution

1. Preparation

• Gather necessary tools and parts.
• Ensure the vehicle is parked on a level surface and the engine is cool.
• Disconnect the battery to prevent any electrical shorts.

2. Check and Replace Engine Oil

• Remove the oil filler cap and check the oil level with a dipstick.
• If oil level is low, add the recommended oil type (5W-30 or as specified in the owner’s manual).
• If oil is dirty or contaminated, proceed to change the oil:
  1. Raise the vehicle using a jack and secure it with jack stands.
  2. Place an oil drain pan under the oil pan.
  3. Remove the oil drain plug using a socket set, and allow old oil to drain completely.
  4. Replace the drain plug and torque to manufacturer specifications (typically around 20 Nm).
  5. Replace the oil filter using an oil filter wrench, applying a thin layer of new oil to the rubber gasket on the new filter before installation.
  6. Fill the engine with new oil through the oil filler cap.

3. Replace Oil Pressure Sending Unit

• Locate the oil pressure sending unit, typically found near the oil filter.
• Disconnect the electrical connector from the sending unit.
• Use a socket wrench to remove the old sending unit.
• Install the new oil pressure sending unit and torque to specifications.
• Reconnect the electrical connector.

4. Test Oil Pressure

• Install a mechanical oil pressure gauge in place of the oil pressure sending unit.
• Start the engine and observe the oil pressure reading; it should be within the manufacturer's specified range (typically between 15-75 psi depending on engine RPM).
• If oil pressure is low, it may indicate internal engine wear or a failing oil pump.
