Solution
1. Preparation
  • Ensure the vehicle is parked on a level surface and the engine is off.
  • Engage the parking brake and wear safety glasses.
  • Gather necessary tools and parts.
2. Address Low Brake Fluid
  • Tools Required: Brake fluid, funnel, absorbent cloth
  • Check the brake fluid level; if low, add the appropriate brake fluid (DOT 4 or as specified in the owner’s manual).
  • Clean any spills immediately to prevent damage to vehicle components.
3. Replace Worn Brake Pads
  • Tools Required: Jack and jack stands, lug wrench, socket set, C-clamp or brake caliper tool
  • Loosen the lug nuts on the wheel corresponding to the brakes being serviced.
  • Jack up the vehicle and secure it with jack stands.
  • Remove the wheel to access the brake caliper.
  • Remove the caliper bolts and lift the caliper off the rotor.
  • Use the C-clamp to retract the caliper piston.
  • Remove the old brake pads and replace them with new ones.
  • Reassemble the caliper and wheel, ensuring all bolts are torqued to manufacturer specifications.
4. Inspect and Replace Brake Rotors (if necessary)
  • Tools Required: Torque wrench, brake cleaner, brake rotor replacement
  • If the brake rotors are worn or scored, remove them following the same steps as with the brake pads.
  • Install the new rotors and clean them with brake cleaner before reassembly.
5. Bleed the Brake System
  • Tools Required: Brake bleeder kit, clear tubing, new brake fluid
  • Attach the clear tubing to the bleeder valve on the brake caliper and submerge the other end in a container with brake fluid.
  • Open the bleeder valve and have an assistant pump the brake pedal until fluid flows without bubbles.
  • Close the bleeder valve and repeat on all wheels as necessary.
  • Ensure the brake fluid reservoir is topped off throughout the bleeding process.
