Solution
1. Preparation
  • Gather tools and parts.
  • Ensure the vehicle is parked on a flat surface and the engine is off.
  • Disconnect the negative battery terminal to prevent electrical issues.
2. Remove the Master Cylinder
  • Tools Required: Socket set, wrenches, brake line wrench, brake fluid catch container.
  • Remove the brake fluid from the master cylinder reservoir using a turkey baster or siphon.
  • Unscrew the brake lines from the master cylinder using a brake line wrench to prevent damage.
  • Unbolt the master cylinder from the brake booster using the socket set.
  • Carefully pull the master cylinder away from the brake booster and remove it from the vehicle.
3. Inspect and Replace
  • Inspect the master cylinder for wear or damage; check the seals as well.
  • If the master cylinder is damaged, install a new one.
  • If only seals are damaged, replace them according to manufacturer specifications.
  • Ensure all mating surfaces are clean before installation.
4. Install the New Master Cylinder
  • Position the new or repaired master cylinder onto the brake booster and tighten it securely.
  • Reconnect the brake lines, ensuring they are properly seated and tightened to manufacturer torque specifications.
  • Refill the master cylinder reservoir with the appropriate brake fluid (DOT 3 or DOT 4, as specified).
5. Bleed the Brake System
  • Tools Required: Brake bleeder kit or a helper.
  • Begin bleeding the brake system to remove air from the lines. Start from the wheel farthest from the master cylinder (usually the right rear) and work toward the closest (left front).
  • Follow the proper bleeding procedure: open the bleeder valve, have an assistant pump the brake pedal, and close the valve before the pedal is released. Repeat until clear fluid without bubbles flows out.
