Solution
1. Preparation
  • Tools Required: OBD-II scanner, socket set, multimeter, power steering fluid, shop towels, leak detection dye (optional).
  • Safety Warnings: Ensure the vehicle is on a level surface and properly secured with jack stands if lifted.
2. Check and Refill Power Steering Fluid
  1. Locate the power steering fluid reservoir.
  2. Remove the cap and check the fluid level.
  3. If low, add the recommended power steering fluid until it reaches the proper level.
  4. Inspect the fluid for contaminants; if it appears dirty or burnt, a fluid flush may be necessary.
3. Inspect and Replace Power Steering Pump (if needed)
  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  2. Remove any components obstructing access to the power steering pump (e.g., belts, brackets).
  3. Disconnect the power steering lines from the pump using a wrench; be prepared for fluid spillage.
  4. Unbolt the power steering pump from its mounting location and remove it.
  5. Install the new power steering pump by following the removal steps in reverse order.
  6. Ensure all connections are tight and refill the power steering fluid.
4. Inspect and Replace Steering Rack or Tie Rods (if needed)
  1. Raise the vehicle and secure it on jack stands.
  2. Remove the front wheels to access the steering components.
  3. Inspect tie rods for wear and replace if necessary.
  4. If the steering rack is damaged, unbolt it from the subframe and disconnect it from the steering column.
  5. Install a new steering rack by reversing the removal process.
  6. Reassemble the front end components and wheels.
