Solution
1. Preparation
  • Tools Required:
    • Fluid catch pan
    • Socket set
    • Torque wrench
  • Safety Warnings: Disconnect the battery before working on electrical systems and allow the engine to cool before inspecting components.
2. Check and Refill Power Steering Fluid
  • Locate the power steering fluid reservoir.
  • Remove the cap and check the fluid level using the dipstick or markings on the reservoir.
  • If low, add the appropriate power steering fluid (consult the owner's manual for specifications) until the correct level is reached.
  • Replace the cap securely.
3. Address Fluid Leaks
  • If leaks are detected, identify the source (hoses, pump, or rack).
  • For hose leaks, loosen the clamps, replace the damaged hose, and reattach.
  • For pump or rack leaks, remove the affected component as detailed below:
    • Power Steering Pump:

      • Disconnect the negative battery terminal.
      • Drain the power steering fluid into a catch pan.
      • Unbolt the pump from its mounting (torque specifications available in the service manual).
      • Remove the pump and replace it with a new unit.
      • Refill the system with power steering fluid.
    • Steering Rack:

      • Disconnect the tie rod ends and steering shaft.
      • Unbolt the steering rack from its mounts.
      • Remove and replace with a new rack.
      • Reassemble and refill the system.
4. Test the System
  • After refilling, turn the steering wheel from lock to lock several times to help purge air from the system.
  • Check fluid levels again and top off if necessary.
