my Volvo XC60 536 (2017-Present) has a check engine light with code P0420

Solution

1. Preparation

• Gather tools and parts needed for the repair.
• Tools Required: OBD-II scanner, multimeter, socket set, torque wrench, safety goggles, gloves.
• Parts Required: Oxygen sensor (if faulty), catalytic converter (if damaged), exhaust gaskets.

2. Inspect and Replace Oxygen Sensors

1. Locate the Oxygen Sensors: Identify the upstream (pre-catalytic) and downstream (post-catalytic) oxygen sensors.
2. Disconnect the Battery: Disconnect the negative terminal of the battery to prevent electrical shorts.
3. Remove the Oxygen Sensors:
   • Use the appropriate socket to unscrew the sensors.
   • Carefully pull out the sensors and disconnect the wiring harness.
4. Install New Oxygen Sensors:
