Solution
1. Preparation
  • Gather tools and parts required for the repair.
  • Disconnect the battery to prevent electrical shorts.
  • Allow transmission fluid to cool before working on the transmission.

Tools Required:

  • OBD-II scanner
  • Multimeter
  • Socket set
  • Torque wrench
  • Transmission fluid pump (if needed)
2. Inspect and Replace the Torque Converter Clutch Solenoid
  1. Locate the Torque Converter Clutch Solenoid:
    • Raise the vehicle safely using jack stands.
    • Remove the transmission pan if necessary for access.
  2. Disconnect the Electrical Connector:
    • Unplug the electrical connector from the torque converter clutch solenoid.
  3. Remove the Solenoid:
    • Unbolt the solenoid using the appropriate socket size.
    • Carefully pull the solenoid out from its housing.
  4. Install the New Solenoid:
    • Apply a small amount of transmission fluid to the O-ring of the new solenoid.
    • Insert the new solenoid into place and tighten the bolts to the manufacturer's specified torque setting.
  5. Reconnect the Electrical Connector:
    • Plug the electrical connector back into the new solenoid.
3. Refill Transmission Fluid
  1. Drain Old Fluid (if necessary):
    • If the fluid condition was poor, drain the old fluid completely.
  2. Add New Transmission Fluid:
    • Use the recommended type of transmission fluid for the XC90 (consult the owner’s manual).
    • Use a transmission fluid pump to fill the transmission to the appropriate level.
4. Reassemble and Test
  1. Reattach the Transmission Pan:
    • Replace the transmission pan and secure it tightly.
  2. Reconnect the Battery:
    • Reconnect the battery terminals.
  3. Start the Engine and Test Drive:
    • Start the vehicle and allow it to reach normal operating temperature.
    • Test drive the vehicle to ensure the transmission shifts smoothly and the check engine light is off.
