Solution
1. Preparation
  • Tools Required: Socket set, torque wrench, spark plug socket, extension bar, ratchet, dielectric grease, clean cloth.
  • Ensure the engine is cool to prevent burns.
  • Disconnect the battery, starting with the negative terminal.
2. Remove Ignition Coils
  • Locate the ignition coils on top of the spark plugs.
  • Disconnect the electrical connector from each ignition coil.
  • Remove the bolts securing the coils using the appropriate socket.
  • Carefully pull the ignition coils straight out of the cylinder head.
3. Remove Old Spark Plugs
  • Use a spark plug socket and ratchet to loosen and remove each spark plug.
  • Turn counterclockwise until the spark plug is free, then lift it out of the cylinder head.
  • Inspect each spark plug for wear and carbon buildup.
4. Install New Spark Plugs
  • Apply a small amount of dielectric grease to the threads of the new spark plugs to ensure a proper seal and ease of removal in the future.
  • Carefully thread each new spark plug into the cylinder head by hand to avoid cross-threading.
  • Tighten each spark plug to the manufacturer’s specifications (typically around 13-15 lb-ft for most Volvo models).
5. Reinstall Ignition Coils
  • Reinsert the ignition coils into their respective positions over the new spark plugs.
  • Secure each coil with the bolts removed earlier.
  • Reconnect the electrical connectors to each ignition coil.
6. Final Checks
  • Reconnect the negative battery terminal.
  • Start the engine to ensure it runs smoothly and without misfiring.
