my Volvo XC90 makes a grinding noise when I brake what could be wrong

Solution

1. Preparation

• Gather necessary tools and parts.
• Ensure the vehicle is on a flat surface and secure it with wheel chocks.
• Raise the vehicle using a jack and support it with jack stands.

2. Remove Wheel

• Use a socket set to remove the lug nuts from the wheel where the grinding noise is occurring.
• Carefully take off the wheel and set it aside.

3. Inspect and Replace Brake Pads

• Inspect Brake Pads:
  • Remove the caliper by unscrewing the caliper mounting bolts using a socket set.
  • Slide the caliper off the rotor and support it with a bungee cord to avoid strain on the brake line.
  • Check the thickness of the brake pads; if they are worn down to less than 3mm, they should be replaced.
• Replace Brake Pads:
  • Remove the old brake pads from the caliper bracket.
  • Install new brake pads (ensure they are the specified type for the XC90).
  • Apply brake grease to the backing of the new pads to prevent squeaking.

4. Inspect and Replace Brake Rotors (if necessary)

• Inspect Rotors:
  • Check the rotors for any signs of damage such as deep grooves or warping.
