Solution
1. Preparation
  • Tools Required: OBD-II scanner, socket set, torque wrench, compression tester, multimeter, fuel injector tester.
  • Ensure the vehicle is parked on a level surface and the engine is cool.
  • Disconnect the battery negative terminal to prevent electrical shorts.
2. Replace Ignition Coil
  1. Remove the engine cover if applicable.
  2. Disconnect the electrical connector from the ignition coil on cylinder 1.
  3. Remove the bolt securing the ignition coil using a socket set.
  4. Pull the ignition coil out of the spark plug well.
  5. Install the new ignition coil by reversing the removal steps and ensuring the connector is secure.
3. Replace Spark Plug
  1. Remove the ignition coil from cylinder 1 as described above.
  2. Use a spark plug socket to remove the old spark plug from cylinder 1.
  3. Inspect the old spark plug for signs of wear or fouling.
  4. Set the gap on the new spark plug to the manufacturer's specifications (typically around 0.028-0.031 inches for most Volvos).
  5. Install the new spark plug and torque to the manufacturer’s specifications (usually around 13-15 lb-ft).
  6. Reinstall the ignition coil.
4. Check Fuel Injector
  1. Disconnect the electrical connector from the fuel injector on cylinder 1.
  2. Use a multimeter to test for proper voltage at the injector connector.
  3. If the voltage is correct, test the injector's resistance with a multimeter; compare it against specifications.
  4. If faulty, replace the fuel injector following similar steps to the ignition coil.
5. Perform Compression Test
  1. Remove the spark plug from cylinder 1.
  2. Insert the compression tester into the spark plug hole.
  3. Have an assistant crank the engine while you observe the tester.
  4. Record the reading and compare with the manufacturer’s specifications for acceptable compression levels.
  5. If compression is low, further diagnosis is needed for potential internal engine issues.
